Research & Innovation: How Collaboration Is Shaping the Future of GinGingers
Powered by Collaboration. Driven by Discovery.
GinGingers may be a small independent Yorkshire skincare brand, but our curiosity has never been small. What started with Apple Cider Vinegar and natural skincare has grown into a journey involving research, universities, innovation programmes and digital transformation. Today, we're working with different academic and innovation partners to understand how we can improve our product, strengthen the customer experience and explore what the next generation of GinGingers could look like.
Small Brand. Big Questions.
Innovation at GinGingers doesn't begin with “What can we launch next?” It begins with “What can we understand better?”
How can we improve the experience of using Apple Cider Vinegar skincare? Can its naturally distinctive aroma be reduced? What could future microbiome-conscious formulations look like? How can natural ingredients and scientific research work together? And how can digital technology help a small Yorkshire manufacturer reach more people?
We don't pretend to have all the answers. Instead, we've built relationships with people and organisations who can help us investigate the questions properly.
University of Bradford: Can We Reduce the ACV Smell?
If you've ever used real Apple Cider Vinegar, you'll know it doesn't exactly arrive quietly. 🍎
Its distinctive aroma is part of the ingredient's natural character, but we also recognise that smell can affect the overall skincare experience. That's why one of our current areas of research with the University of Bradford explores the process of reducing the distinctive Apple Cider Vinegar odour.
The goal isn't simply to cover the smell with something stronger. We're interested in understanding how the aroma might be reduced through research and development while retaining the ingredients and principles at the heart of GinGingers.
It's a simple question with a surprisingly interesting research journey behind it:
Can we keep what matters while making the experience even better?
University of York: Where Natural Ingredients Meet Innovation
Our research journey also connects with the Biorenewables Development Centre at the University of York, which works between academia and industry to support the development and commercialisation of bio-based products and processes. Its expertise includes chemistry, biology, process development and analytical capabilities, including support relevant to cosmetic innovation.
For GinGingers, this connection reflects an important part of our philosophy. Natural skincare doesn't have to stand still. Natural ingredients can provide the starting point, while research can help us better understand their possibilities and how future products might be developed responsibly.
Looking Towards Microbiome-Conscious Skincare
Another area we're interested in exploring is future microbiome-conscious formulation development.
Our understanding of the skin and scalp continues to evolve, and we're interested in how future GinGingers formulations might be developed with greater awareness of their complex microbiome environments.
This is a future research direction, rather than a claim about what our current Apple Cider Vinegar Gel does.
For us, that's an important part of responsible innovation. Research isn't about announcing the answer before you've finished asking the question.
Sometimes it's perfectly okay to say:
We're exploring it.

Made Smarter: Innovation Isn't Only Inside the Tube
Research and innovation at GinGingers aren't limited to ingredients and formulations.
A growing skincare manufacturer also needs the right digital foundations, e-commerce systems, content, analytics and customer experience around the product.
Through the Made Smarter Yorkshire & Humber Digital Internship programme, GinGingers received digital support aimed at strengthening those foundations and helping the business develop a more scalable digital presence. Made Smarter has featured the GinGingers journey as an example of how digital interns can support Yorkshire manufacturers with fresh skills and faster digital progress.
For us, this represents another type of innovation.
Not everything happens in a laboratory.
Sometimes transformation happens behind a laptop. 💻🍎
Sheffield Hallam University: Bringing Digital Skills Into the Business
Our connection with Sheffield Hallam University through the Made Smarter programme brought academic and digital expertise directly into a real small-business environment.
This support has contributed to the wider digital development around GinGingers, from strengthening our online presence to thinking more strategically about e-commerce and digital growth.
It demonstrates something we increasingly believe: research, manufacturing and digital transformation shouldn't operate as completely separate worlds.
When they connect, small businesses can move faster and learn much more along the way.
Coventry University: Digital Knowledge Meeting a Yorkshire Brand
Coventry University has also become part of the wider GinGingers journey through digital marketing knowledge being brought into the business alongside the Made Smarter and Sheffield Hallam-supported internship activity.
That means our innovation story isn't simply about changing what's inside the tube. It's also about improving how GinGingers communicates, how customers discover the brand, how our digital platforms perform and how the business prepares for future growth.
A better product needs a better journey around it.
Different Partners. Different Expertise. One GinGingers Journey.
What makes these collaborations exciting isn't simply having several university names associated with GinGingers.
It's what different partners can bring to different questions.
The University of Bradford contributes to our exploration around Apple Cider Vinegar aroma and product experience. The University of York's Biorenewables Development Centre connects us with wider bio-based research and innovation expertise. Made Smarter, Sheffield Hallam University and Coventry University have helped shape another side of the journey; digital capability, e-commerce and business growth.
Different expertise.
Different perspectives.
But all helping us think more carefully about where GinGingers goes next.
Research in the Product. Innovation Across the Business.
For us, skincare innovation is becoming much bigger than formulation alone.
It's understanding ingredients.

NATURAL CARE. REAL RESULTS.
Award-winning skincare, naturally crafted in Yorkshire.
It's researching the ACV aroma.
It's exploring future formulation possibilities.
It's strengthening our digital infrastructure.
It's improving how we communicate with customers.
And sometimes it's simply having someone ask a question we hadn't thought to ask ourselves.
That's the real value of collaboration.
Staying Natural While Continuing to Evolve
As our research journey grows, one thing remains important: GinGingers still needs to feel like GinGingers.
We're not interested in making skincare more complicated simply so we can call it innovative.
Our aim is to use research and collaboration to understand where meaningful improvements can be made while remaining connected to the natural ingredients, simplicity and transparency behind the brand.
Sometimes innovation means adding something.
Sometimes it means changing a process.
Sometimes it means improving the experience.
And sometimes it means discovering that what you're already doing simply needs to be understood better.
From Yorkshire Curiosity to the Next Generation of GinGingers
A curiosity around Apple Cider Vinegar has now travelled much further than we originally imagined.
It has taken GinGingers into conversations around university research, biorenewables, formulation development, digital transformation, e-commerce and future microbiome-conscious skincare.
And we're still asking questions.
Can we make the ACV experience better?
What can research teach us about future natural skincare?
How can digital innovation help a small independent manufacturer grow?
And what might the next generation of GinGingers become?
We don't have every answer yet.
That's exactly why we're researching.
Rooted in nature. Strengthened by research. Powered by collaboration. Driven by curiosity. 🍎🔬🌿

Final Thoughts
If you're wondering whether apple cider vinegar is safe for your face, the most balanced answer is this:
Raw household apple cider vinegar is different from a skincare product that has been specifically formulated for cosmetic use.
Choosing products created with skincare in mind, introducing them gradually and following the recommended directions is often a more considered approach.
At GinGingers, we're passionate about creating natural skincare inspired by real ingredients, responsible innovation and honest conversations rather than short-lived trends.
Because great skincare doesn't begin with bold promises.
It begins with thoughtful choices.

Why Choose Gingingers
A Calm, Family-Led, Lab Tested, UK's Award Winning Skincare Brand
Before COVID-19 changed the world, GinGingers was already taking shape. I was carefully developing formulations, inspired by my daughter - our very own "GinGinger." She wasn't just the inspiration behind the name; she was my biggest little cheerleader, always curious, always asking questions, and even drawing our very first logo when she was just four years old.
The pandemic may have paused our journey, but it never stopped our belief in creating honest, natural skincare.
Today, GinGingers is proudly family-led, made in Yorkshire, award-winning, independently laboratory tested, and supported by research and digital collaborations with the University of York, Sheffield Hallam University, and Coventry University.
Whether you're choosing GinGingers for yourself, your family, or your customers, every product carries the same promise:
"If it isn't good enough for my daughter, it isn't good enough for yours."
